Upper Endoscopy (EGD)

An upper endoscopy, also called an EGD (esophagogastroduodenoscopy), is a safe and effective procedure that allows your doctor to examine the lining of your esophagus, stomach, and upper small intestine.

It is commonly used to evaluate symptoms of acid reflux (GERD), including frequent heartburn, regurgitation, difficulty swallowing, or chronic cough.

During the procedure, a thin, flexible tube with a camera is gently passed through the mouth while you are comfortably sedated. This allows your doctor to directly visualize the upper digestive tract and identify any areas of irritation or concern.

Why Upper Endoscopy Is Important for Reflux

Occasional heartburn is common—but chronic reflux can lead to more serious conditions over time.

An upper endoscopy helps your doctor:

  • Evaluate inflammation of the esophagus (Gastroesophageal reflux disease)
  • Detect complications such as ulcers or narrowing (strictures)
  • Screen for Barrett’s esophagus, a condition that can develop from long-term reflux
  • Rule out more serious conditions, including early esophageal cancer

Early evaluation allows for better symptom control and helps prevent long-term damage.closely with you to develop a treatment plan that meets your unique needs and goals.

What to Expect

  • Before the procedure: You’ll need to avoid eating or drinking for several hours beforehand.
  • During the procedure: You’ll receive sedation to keep you comfortable. The procedure typically takes 15–30 minutes.
  • Afterward: You’ll go home the same day and can usually resume normal activities by the next day.
  • In some patients we are able to do an upper endoscopy and colonoscopy together to provide more convenient and cost saving care.

When Should You Consider an Upper Endoscopy?

You may benefit from an upper endoscopy if you have:

  • Frequent or persistent heartburn
  • Symptoms that require medication daily
  • Difficulty or pain with swallowing, or food getting stuck
  • Chronic cough, hoarseness, or throat clearing
  • Long-standing reflux symptoms (especially over many years)

Benefits of Upper Endoscopy

  • Direct visualization of the esophagus and stomach
  • Ability to detect and diagnose conditions early
  • Can obtain biopsies if needed during the same procedure
  • Helps guide the most effective treatment plan
  • Provides reassurance when symptoms are unclear
