Lipomas and Cysts: Removal of Benign Soft Tissue Lumps

A lipoma is a common, noncancerous (benign) growth made up of fatty tissue. These soft, slow-growing lumps are typically found just beneath the skin and can occur almost anywhere on the body.

Lipoma excision is a straightforward procedure to remove these growths—often done for comfort, cosmetic reasons, or to confirm the diagnosis.

What Is a Lipoma?

Lipomas are:

  • Soft and movable under the skin
  • Usually painless
  • Slow-growing over time
  • Common on the arms, back, shoulders, neck, or thighs

Most lipomas are harmless, but they can become bothersome depending on their size or location.

When Is Removal Recommended?

Excision may be recommended if:

  • The lump is growing or changing
  • It causes pain or discomfort
  • It interferes with movement or daily activities
  • It is cosmetically concerning
  • There is any uncertainty about the diagnosis

Removal also allows for confirmation that the growth is benign.

What Does the Procedure Involve?

Excision is typically a minor outpatient procedure performed under local anesthesia.

During the procedure:

  • A small incision is made over the area
  • The fatty tissue or cyst is carefully removed
  • The incision is closed with sutures

Most procedures take 30 minutes or less depending on the size and location.

What to Expect

  • Before the procedure: Evaluation to confirm the diagnosis
  • During the procedure: Local or general anesthesia keeps you comfortable
  • After the procedure: Mild soreness or bruising is common
  • Recovery: Most patients return to normal activities right away.

You will receive instructions on wound care and follow-up.

Benefits of Excision

  • Relief from discomfort or irritation
  • Improved appearance
  • Definitive diagnosis with tissue analysis
  • Quick, minimally invasive procedure
  • Low risk and fast recovery
