Hiatal Hernia Repair: Lasting Relief from Reflux

A hiatal hernia occurs when part of the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm into the chest. This can weaken the body’s natural barrier against acid reflux and contribute to persistent heartburn and discomfort.

Hiatal hernia repair is a surgical procedure designed to restore normal anatomy and reduce reflux symptoms—often providing long-term relief when medication side effects are concerning, or medications alone are not enough.

What Is Hiatal Hernia Repair?

During surgery, the stomach is gently moved back into the abdomen, and the opening in the diaphragm is tightened. In many cases, the surgeon also performs a fundoplication, wrapping part of the stomach around the lower esophagus to strengthen the valve that prevents acid reflux.

Most procedures are performed using minimally invasive (laparoscopic or robotic) techniques, which typically allow for smaller incisions, less discomfort, and faster recovery.

When Is Surgery Recommended?

Not all hiatal hernias require surgery. Repair is typically considered when:

  • Reflux symptoms are severe or persistent despite medication
  • You have complications of reflux such as inflammation or narrowing of the esophagus
  • There is a large hiatal hernia causing symptoms like chest discomfort, difficulty swallowing, or shortness of breath
  • You prefer a long-term solution rather than ongoing medication

Your doctor will help determine whether surgery is the right option based on your symptoms, testing, and overall health.

Success Rates and Outcomes

Hiatal hernia repair is a well-established procedure with high success rates.

  • Most patients experience significant improvement or complete resolution of reflux symptoms
  • Long-term success rates are generally 85–90% or higher in appropriately selected patients
  • Many patients are able to reduce or stop reflux medications after surgery

As with any procedure, outcomes depend on individual factors, including the size of the hernia and overall health.

What to Expect

  • Before surgery: You may undergo testing such as imaging or esophageal studies to guide treatment
  • During surgery: The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes 1–2 hours
  • After surgery: Most patients go home within 1–2 days and return to normal activities within a few weeks
  • Recovery: A temporary modified diet is often recommended as your body heals

Benefits of Hiatal Hernia Repair

  • Long-term relief from reflux symptoms
  • Reduced dependence on medications
  • Improved quality of life
  • Prevention of complications related to chronic reflux
  • Minimally invasive approach with relatively quick recovery
